Traction for a neck injury, re-entry into the production world, my hubby was laid off, parenting a teenager, we’re selling our house AND moving.   I’M STRESSED!   Ironically, the DC talk show Let’s Talk Live asked me to do a segment about stress busters so here are some tried and true ways to practice safe stress.   If you’re too frazzled to take 5 minutes to watch this video, see below for some pointers that are written.

PRACTICE SAFE STRESS – Use a prophylactic and breathe into a balloon. Science has shown that breathing is the best way to reduce stress. When we are stressed, we take short, shallow breaths. Blowing up a balloon or taking deep breaths forces you to go more slowly and deeply, since you’re using your diaphragm. It also activates your parasympathetic nervous system, reducing your heart rate and relaxing your muscles.

DIVIDE AND CONQUER  – Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.  How does this apply to stress?  Take an emotional stock of all that is worrying you. Divide it up into what can be done now and get rid of the things out of your control.

BE A KID – Laughter is a great way to deal with stress.  Kids laugh 300x day whereas adults laugh approximately 20x.  Here are some other things we can learn from kids to reduce stress:

    1. Play with a ball, a stress ball. Study in England showed that stress balls were the best for managing pain, anxiety by 30%.
    2. Color – Science shows it calms us down.

Chew gum if there’s an annoying noise – lawnmower, parking dog, buzz when taking a test.  Wales, England study showed chewing gum was associated with better performance and mood.

READ YOUR WAY OUT OF STRESS –  Scientists at Univ of Sussex in Brighton, England found that six minutes of reading is all you need to reduce stress by 68%. Other ideas: having a cup of tea, listening to music, take a walk.

DANCE– Dancing stimulates the release of feel good hormones so we can deal with stress. Have regular dance breaks. I’m not kidding!   This video should get you off your tushie…

Talk about stress !!! Been there for long time. Finally I conquered the beast with Nick Ortner tapping meditation and self hypnosis with Joseph Claugh. I am in the now, centred, motivated and happy within myself.

Hi Fabiola. I’ll check out Joseph. Tapping is supposed to be very grounding. Glad you’re happy!
